The intersection of Telegraph and Schoolcraft roads is raising safety concerns among residents, despite showing a slight improvement in crash statistics over the past year.
The intersection, which serves as a major connection point to nearby expressways, recorded 104 traffic crashes this year, down from 136 in 2024, according to police.
Resident Highlights Daily Challenges
Anna Williams, a longtime Redford resident since 2003, describes the daily challenges of navigating the intersection, particularly during morning rush hour around 6:30 a.m.
“It’s very difficult just to get over and to get across to get to the expressway on the other side,” said Williams, noting the constant stream of vehicles from multiple directions, including expressway exit traffic.
The complex traffic pattern requires drivers to navigate across multiple lanes while contending with heavy traffic flow from the expressway exits.
Police Response and Future Plans
In response to community concerns, Redford Township Police Department confirms that the Telegraph-Schoolcraft intersection is designated as a high patrol area for officers.
The department has announced plans to expand its Traffic Bureau by adding another officer to enhance traffic enforcement throughout the Township. This expansion aims to address ongoing safety concerns and maintain the downward trend in accident rates.
Looking Forward
While the reduction in accidents from 2024 to 2025 suggests some improvement in safety conditions, the intersection remains a focal point for traffic enforcement efforts.
Redford Township police told Local 4 it plans to expand its traffic bureau by adding another officer to further increase directed traffic patrols throughout the township, said Capt. Michelle Dietrich.
