Greg Mudge street sign unveiled outside Mudgie’s in Detroit

Owner of beloved Corktown restaurant died in 2021

DETROIT – A street sign honoring the founder of a beloved restaurant in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood was unveiled Friday.

At about 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, friends, family members and colleagues joined city leaders for an unveiling ceremony for a secondary street sign honoring Greg Mudge, the founder of Mudgie’s Deli & Wine Shop.

“I am honored to be here to help be a part of this process,” Detroit Councilwoman Gabriela Santiago-Romero said during the ceremony. “It was hard, it took years of organizing, but we did it. As a community, we were able to gather over 170 letters of support. People came in and made public comments consistently.”

The councilwoman thanked the community members for their work in getting the street sign up.

“It really meant a lot, because my colleagues who may not have known Greg beyond just the sandwiches that we know of Mudgie’s, learned about the connection that he had to our community, to everyone in the community,” said Santiago-Romero. “How he gave back.”

The sign is located at the corner of Porter and Brooklyn Street, right outside the restaurant.

Greg Mudge, who was an early investor in Corktown, opened the restaurant in 2008 and unexpectedly died at the age of 46 in September 2021.
