Westland police have arrested a suspect in the shooting at Kroger that took the life of a Salvation Army bell ringer.

Police are releasing new details about the incident.

The sound of the Salvation Army bell, a symbol of the holiday season, has gone silent in Westland.

Evelyn Mason, a Westland resident, said, “I can’t believe it, it’s unbelievable and a bell ringer. I mean, come on, they’re helping people. Somebody is sick.”

On Thursday (Dec. 19) evening, a Salvation Army bell ringer was shot and killed at the Kroger on Ford Road.

Pontiac community rallies to bring holiday cheer to 9-year-old after tragic car crash

Pontiac city officials and community leaders came together Friday to bring holiday cheer to a 9-year-old girl who lost her mother and two younger brothers in a tragic crash earlier this year.

Demi Smith, who recently began walking again after suffering a broken leg in the August crash, received Christmas gifts and a $1,000 check from the Bob Kaiser Charity during the surprise celebration.

U.S. Rep. Haley Stephens and State Rep. Brenda Carter joined Mayor-Elect Mike McGuinness, Oakland County Chair Dave Woodward, and Councilman William Carrington in organizing the holiday gathering.

Demolition begins on new Detroit City FC Stadium project

Demolition crews began tearing down the long-vacant Southwest Detroit Hospital on Friday, marking the first step toward construction of Detroit City Football Club’s new 15,000-seat stadium.

The new AlumniFi Field will be built at the corner of Michigan Avenue and 20th Street, just west of Michigan Central Station, doubling the capacity of the team’s current home.

“To replace an abandoned building with a center for sports and entertainment on this stretch of Michigan Avenue is a great step forward for the city of Detroit,” Mayor Mike Duggan said.

I grew up in Saline, where my family still resides. When I was young and living in Pennsylvania, a tornado put a pine tree through our house.

This sparked my initial fascination with weather, and as I grew older, I continued to develop a strong interest in math and science.
