A Detroit man is facing a federal charge in connection with a shooting on I-275 that injured two people.

Brandon Grimes, 21, was initially charged in September in connection with a shooting on I-275 in Romulus. According to a criminal complaint, a federal charge was added to his list of felony charges.

The shooting happened on southbound I-275 near Eureka Road in Romulus on Aug. 19, 2025. Two people were shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a criminal complaint filed on Sept. 10, 2025, Michigan State Police investigated the shooting and executed a search warrant at a home in Detroit. Grimes was in the home at the time of the search.

During the search, police found a Glock, Model 23C, .40 caliber pistol in a bedroom. Next to the pistol was a debit card with Grimes’ name on it. In the same room, police found ammunition, phones and documents with Grimes’ name on them.

According to authorities, the Glock pistol was reported stolen out of Detroit in January 2023. After further investigation, police learned that the gun was also linked to a shooting in Detroit in June 2025, where three people were shot.

Grimes admitted to buying the pistol about two to three weeks prior to the search, according to the criminal complaint.

Previous conviction

Grimes was on probation at the time of the search under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, beginning in April 2025, for felony food stamps fraud out of Macomb County.

In May 2025, he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in Wayne County, and he pleaded guilty on Aug. 18. His sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 15, 2025.

Faces multiple charges

According to court records, Grimes faces multiple charges, including assault with intent to murder and felony firearm. He is also facing a federal charge of receiving a firearm while under indictment.

He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 13, 2026, for a probable cause hearing.
