DETROIT – The first candle of the Kwanzaa kinara in downtown Detroit was lit -- marking the start of the celebration.
It now shines brightly alongside other city holiday lights.
The 30-foot-tall kinara is recognized as one of the largest Kwanzaa displays in the world.
It stands proudly among Detroit’s other holiday symbols, including the menorah and Christmas tree.
The kinara serves as a vibrant symbol of African American culture, reflecting the spirit of Kwanzaa.
Njia Kai, program and special events producer with Downtown Detroit Partnership, said, “I grew up in Detroit and we have always been in communities full of folks from all over the world. Detroit’s an international city, an international destination for many people. I’m very happy and we are happy to see Kwanzaa kind of come downtown and have an opportunity to be part of the milieu of holiday celebrations that happen in Detroit.”
This year marked the fourth annual lighting ceremony in Detroit, a tradition organizers hope will continue for many years.
