Wyandotte man pleads guilty to embezzling more than $500K

Prosecutors push for 2-year minimum jail term

WYANDOTTE, Mich. – A 45-year-old man from Wyandotte has admitted he’s embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from his employer.

On Monday, Jan. 12, Jason Garza, pleaded guilty to three counts of embezzlement, three counts of using a computer to commit a crime and four counts of failure to file income taxes.

Garza was employed by Montway Auto Transport in Canton Township from 2021-22. During that time, he reportedly offered customers unauthorized discounts if they paid Garza directly through mobile payment apps. He would keep those payments for himself.

As part of the plea agreement, Garza will pay full restitution to the Michigan Department of Treasury, Montway LLC, and Travelers Insurance. The total amount exceeds half a million dollars.

Prosecutors are pushing for Garza to be sentenced to at least two years in jail.

As a condition of this plea agreement, the People will seek a 24-month minimum term of incarceration and Garza has agreed to pay full restitution.
