16 Michigan counties under winter weather alerts due to chance for up to 7 inches of snow

Several Michigan counties are under winter weather alerts as more snow is expected as we head into the weekend. Metro Detroit isn't under a weather advisory, but an additional 1-3 inches of accumulation is possible. (WDIV)

Several Michigan counties are under winter weather alerts as more snow is expected heading into the weekend, with up to 7 inches of snow possible in some areas.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the following counties until 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026:

  • Mason County
  • Lake County
  • Oceana County
  • Newaygo County
  • Muskegon County
  • Ottawa County

Total snow accumulations for the counties listed above are expected to be between 4 and 7 inches, according to the National Weather Service.


The following counties are also under a winter weather advisory until 7 a.m. on Saturday:

  • Kent County
  • Allegan County
  • Van Buren County

The counties listed above are expected to see total snow accumulations of 2-4 inches, with 5 inches possible in some areas.


The following counties are also under a winter weather advisory until 7 a.m. on Saturday:

  • Leelanau County
  • Benzie County
  • Manistee County

Additional snow accumulations of 3-6 inches are expected, with higher totals possible in some areas.

The NWS said the heaviest snow is expected along the M-22 corridor.


A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, for Western Mackinac County, Beaver Island and surrounding islands.

These areas are expected to get additional accumulations of 4-6 inches, with the heaviest snow expected near and west of Naubinway in Mackinac County.


The following areas will also be under a winter weather advisory:

  • Keweenaw County (7 a.m. Friday until 1 p.m. on Saturday)
  • Luce County (1 a.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Friday)

The NWS said additional accumulations of 2-4 inches is expected in Keweenaw County, while 1-3 inches of additional snow is expected in Luce County.

The heaviest snow is expected along M-28 and north into Newberry, according to the NWS.


What is a winter weather advisory?

According to the NWS, "A Winter Weather Advisory will be issued for any amount of freezing rain, or when 2 to 4 inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain), is expected to cause a significant inconvenience, but not serious enough to warrant a warning."

Metro Detroit snow forecast

An additional 1-3 inches of snow is expected in Metro Detroit by this evening.

A few rounds of light snow are expected over the morning hours, but the more widespread, steady snow is expected to move through the region just before noon and last throughout the afternoon.
