The city of Detroit is extending the availability of standby shelters and respite locations to help residents cope with continued extreme cold conditions through noon on Wednesday, Jan. 21.

In partnership with Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, an overnight shelter at 13130 Woodward Avenue is open now through Jan. 21 at noon.

It serves all household types, including single men and women and families with children.

The Pope Francis Center will open a second stand-by shelter for single adults on Monday, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m., remaining open until Jan. 21 at noon.

Residents seeking relief from the bitter cold can also visit any Detroit Public Library branch during regular hours, though all library locations will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19.

Additionally, two Detroit recreation centers—the Adams-Butzel Complex and Coleman A. Young Recreation Center—will be open on MLK Day to offer daytime respite.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens with wind chills in the single digits.

Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair Razo has declared a cold-weather health emergency to keep residents safe.

Residents can access overnight shelters anytime by walking in—no referral needed—or by calling the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine at 866-313-2520, which operates 24/7.

Those sleeping outside and needing help after hours should visit a police precinct to connect with outreach teams for overnight services.

In-person Coordinated Access to Housing (CAM) sites are available at Cass Community Social Services and NOAH at Central on select dates, with adjusted holiday hours.

The city currently operates more than 1,700 emergency shelter and drop-in center beds through local partners.

After 6 p.m. on weekdays and 24/7 on weekends, individuals sleeping outside or in cars can call the HelpLine or visit the nearest police station for immediate assistance with shelter.

Detroit recreation centers serve as respite locations during regular business hours, with special MLK Day hours for Adams-Butzel and Coleman A. Young centers.

All Detroit Public Library branches provide warm spaces during normal hours except on Jan. 19 when they are closed for the holiday.

Additional resources include Michigan’s Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-866-864-2338, mental health emergency lines at 9-8-8, and Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network’s 24-hour helpline at 1-800-241-4949.

The Detroit Housing Services office and HelpLine assist residents facing housing emergencies by providing assistance with finding stable housing, financial support, employment assistance, and property condition complaints.

Since opening, DHS has placed over 5,100 residents in permanent housing and stabilized hundreds more with temporary housing.

Individuals at risk of or currently unhoused should call 866-313-2520 for connection to housing resources or street outreach assistance.
