DETROIT – The National Football League has named Detroit native Shawn Smith as the lead on-field official for Super Bowl LX.

Smith, who earned a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from Ferris State University in 1994, will serve as the referee for the Feb. 8 game at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the NFL announced on Wednesday (Jan. 21).

Now in his 11th NFL season and eighth as a referee, Smith is the lead official, easily recognized by his white cap.

The referee manages the entire officiating crew, announces penalties, and has final authority on rulings.

Smith previously served as the alternate referee for Super Bowls LV and LVIII.

The 2026 game will mark his first on-field appearance at the Super Bowl.

Last year’s Super Bowl set a viewership record with nearly 130 million viewers, making it the most-watched television program of 2025.

Smith’s officiating career began in junior high school, working Pop Warner games.

He also officiated flag football at Eastern Michigan University.

Smith was recruited to run track and play football at Eastern Michigan before transferring to Ferris State.

While at Ferris State, he began officiating high school football and later moved up to Division II games.

Smith joined the NFL officiating ranks in 2015.
