‘Lead by example’: History-maker Erin Jackson skates toward another Olympic moment in Milan

The Winter Olympics begin Feb. 6

As the countdown to the Winter Games continues in Milan, among the athletes preparing to medal is American speed skater Erin Jackson, who made history as the first Black woman to win individual gold at a Winter Olympics.

Jackson says she wants to lead by example and use her journey to inspire the next generation.

At her first Olympics in 2018, Jackson was just starting in the sport and hadn’t even told her dad she was going to the Olympic trials.

“That was a fun conversation,” Jackson said.

In 2022, despite being ranked number one in the world, Jackson missed making the team due to a misstep at Trials.

However, her longtime friend and mentor, Brittany Bowe, gave up her spot so Jackson could compete.

The story had a fairy tale ending: Jackson won gold, and Bowe earned bronze in her event.

“I’m definitely just an athlete trying to do my best in the sport, but I’m always trying to be an example no matter what,” Jackson said. “If people can see me out there competing and find inspiration in that, I just think it’s really amazing.”

Jackson keeps her pets close for inspiration, saying, “My lock screen is all my beautiful pets: Bradley, Winnie, Douggee, and Reggie.”
