Southfield apartment fire displaces 27 residents

Cause of the fire remains under investigation

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – 27 people have been displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Southfield.

The Southfield Fire Department was called to the scene at 2:44 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026.

When crews arrived, smoke was billowing out of the front of the building -- the fire reached all four stories of the building.

Firefighters rescued residents using various ladder evacuations, including a fourth-floor rescue.

Due to the intensity of the fire -- multiple agencies, including Royal Oak and Birmingham fire departments, assisted at the scene.

Three apartments sustained significant damage, and five apartments experienced minor damage, police said.

27 residents were displaced due to the fire -- the American Red Cross is assisting them with temporary housing.

Two residents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.

An investigation is ongoing.
