Meijer recalls nearly 40,000 gallons of water due to ‘floating black substance’

Water sold in Michigan, five other states

FDA classifies recall as Class II amid safety concerns (KPRC2)

DETROIT – Meijer is recalling nearly 40,000 gallons of water because of a “floating black foreign substance.”

The Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class II, meaning the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, or there is a remote possibility of serious adverse health consequences.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the recall affects Meijer Steam Distilled Water sold in one-gallon plastic jugs with red lids. The product was distributed in all states where Meijer operates: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin.

38,043 gallons of water have been recalled.

The recalled water has a sell-by date of Oct. 4, 2026, with Lot Code 39-222 #3, Product ID 472859 and Meijer Item Code 477910.

Its UPC code is 041250841197.

Distilled water is purified by heating water to create steam, which is collected, leaving impurities behind. It is unknown how the “floating black foreign substance in the product” got into the water.

Consumers who have purchased this product are advised to stop using it immediately.
