mlive.comDems support for Gibbs could backfire ‘in a spectacular way,’ defeated U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer warns
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer on Sunday said a Democratic ad campaign to boost support for John Gibbs in the Republican primary for a West Michigan congressional seat could backfire “in a spectacular way” in the November election. “It’s a dangerous strategy,” Meijer said, speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation. The ad highlighted Gibbs’ endorsement by Trump, his service in the Trump administration, and said Gibbs would support policies such as “crack down on immigration” and a pro “patriotic” education in K-12 schools. The idea behind the ad, from Democrats’ perspective, was that Gibbs would be easier to beat than Meijer in the November general election. On Sunday, Meijer took responsibility for being defeated by Gibbs.

Gibbs, 43, has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Stanford University and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University. Meijer’s impeachment vote “creates a huge opportunity” for his campaign, Gibbs said. He consistently polls as GOP voters’ top choice for a 2024 presidential candidate, and his endorsements have already made a difference in other primaries. The GOP primary winner will face Democratic immigration attorney Hillary Scholten, who lost to Meijer in 2020 by 6 percentage points. “It’s a huge demerit against him in a primary,” Dulio said of Meijer’s impeachment vote. Despite his impeachment vote, Meijer said the Trump presidency still produced “tremendous policy successes,” including speeding up COVID-19 vaccines, improving criminal justice and pulling back military overseas.
