Detroit woman’s flooded basement fixed after week of calls to city

Residents express frustration with delayed city response

DETROIT – A Detroit woman struggled with a flooded basement for more than a week after a pipe burst during the cold weather.

She reached out to the city multiple times, but the water kept running.

After the intervention, the water was finally shut off, ending the flooding.

When first seen, the basement was about a foot deep in water, making it impossible to go down the stairs. The flooding damaged property and forced the woman to sleep elsewhere.

“There’s nothing happening,” Tina Jones, whose basement flooded, said. “I don’t know, should I keep calling, or what?”

She called the city repeatedly. While officials came to check, she said nothing changed.

“They don’t care. The water company is on some other stuff, they on some bs and it doesn’t matter. It’s unbelievable,” Jones said.

The house holds deep meaning for Jones, who has lived there since she was 14.

“I don’t know what to say. I just hate that this is happening,” Jones said. “The house is going to be destroyed basically.”

After reaching out to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, they committed to investigating the issue and isolating the water line to pinpoint the problem. Less than an hour later, crews arrived and shut off the water. Now, Jones can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
