Black Lake sturgeon season begins this weekend -- What to know

Starting at 8 a.m. on Feb. 7, the race to catch the “dinosaur fish” begins.

No, it’s not really a dinosaur, but the Black Lake sturgeon has been around for millions of years.

If you’re registered to fish, you can start at 8 a.m. If you get there at 8:20 a.m., you’re not getting any fish.

The quota this year is six sturgeon, and that short season is thanks to decades of successful efforts to rebuild the sturgeon population.

Tim Cwalinski, a fisheries unit supervisor in Gaylord with the Michigan DNR, joined Local 4 Live to talk about the season. You can watch the full interview at the beginning of this article.
