WYANDOTTE, Mich. – A Wyandotte family is rebuilding a beloved family-owned bakery after a devastating car crash that closed the business for the past two years.
Luis and Xochil Aguinaga opened Vinewood Mexican Bakery in 2013 after relocating from Southwest Detroit to Wyandotte.

After previously working at La Gloria Bakery, a Mexicantown staple, Luis started his own family-run venture, living and working at the Vinewood Street location.
The bakery quickly became a community favorite, selling traditional Mexican dishes such as conchas, tamales, and empanadas.
In 2023, the couple’s lives changed when a driver hit the side of their building, damaging a structural beam and knocking it off its foundation, making it unsafe to occupy.
The couple lost not only their business, but also their home.
While insurance covered part of the damages, the family has been raising funds to complete the remaining repairs needed to reopen.
In 2025, the family paid for a contractor who never finished the work they were hired to do, another financially devastating blow.
After more than two years, the family was ready to sell the building and give up on the bakery, but community members encouraged them to keep going.
This week, a GoFundMe was started to help the family get back on their feet with new contractors and get back in business. In just five days, the fundraiser has raised more than $3,000.
“Today, we are slowly rebuilding piece by piece, step by step, with new contractors and renewed determination,” wrote daughter Lizeth Garcia. “It is not easy. We are starting over from the ground up. But we are still here. And we are not giving up.”
