MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – An Ohio man was taken into custody early Saturday morning after leading authorities on a chase in Monroe County, officials said.

At about 3:05 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, a deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on a silver BMW SUV at N. Dixie Highway and Sandy Creek Road for a traffic violation, according to a release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The car initially pulled over, allowing the deputy to obtain the license plate information. However, the driver suddenly fled the scene.

The SUV fled north on North Dixie Highway and continued toward the U.S. Turnpike, heading to the county line. Deputies terminated the pursuit at that point but alerted neighboring Downriver police agencies to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

About 45 minutes later, Monroe County Central Dispatch reported that Flat Rock police officers were pursuing the same BMW southbound on Telegraph Road as it re-entered Monroe County. The SUV was operating on “two blown-out tires and was on rims,” according to the release.

Flat Rock officers continued the chase until the deputy who initially tried to conduct the traffic stop reengaged the pursuit at southbound Telegraph and Ready Roads.

The suspect then fled north on I-275 before exiting at Carleton Rockwood Road and heading east. The pursuit came to an end near Stoneridge Lane when the damaged BMW became inoperable.

The driver, identified as a 35-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio, was taken into custody without further incident. He faces charges of fleeing and eluding, as well as resisting and obstructing. Authorities are not releasing his name until he is arraigned.

The investigation is ongoing.
