The Detroit Tigers cut seven players from big-league camp on Monday morning, paring down the roster for the stretch run of spring training. He’s given up seven runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings this spring. He struck out 11 in seven innings of work this spring and uses a different arm angle that seems to give hitters problems. He debuted in 2021 for the San Francisco Giants, throwing 13 1/3 innings without an earned run and earning a spot on the club’s playoff roster. TOLEDO, Ohio — A 57-year-old woman has died after she was attacked by her own dog in her backyard, reports say. Police tell WTOL Channel 11 that Bonnie Varnes was found in the yard “severely mutilated and unconscious.” Varnes was taken to a hospital but she died of her injuries. The attack occurred at about 6 p.m. Monday, WTVG Channel 13 reports. The Blade reports that a coroner’s report says Varnes suffered bites to her head, face and neck. The dog reportedly was taken by authorities and was euthanized.

MONROE, MI – A Coast Guard crew from Toledo assisted a vessel in distress over the weekend. Coast Guard officials say the crew was dispatched after a 16-foot boat got stuck in the mud near the Metro Detroit community along Lake Erie on Sunday. There was one person onboard at the time and they were wearing a life jackets, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard is using the incident to remind boaters that they should always wear a life jacket while on the water or ice. Toledo’s missions include search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, homeland security, ice rescue, recreational boating safety, military readiness, and environmental response.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The polar bear family at the Toledo Zoo is a little larger, with the zoo announcing the birth of twin bear cubs. Crystal, a 24-year-old female polar bear, gave birth to the cubs on Dec. 1. The zoo said in an Instagram post that this is the first time polar bears have been born there since 2012. Polar bear cubs commonly are born as twins and usually are 12-14 inches long and weigh only about a pound, according to the World Wildlife Fund. According to the WWF, there are an estimated 22,000 to 31,000 polar bears still living in the wild.
