DETROIT – Authorities are looking for a 29-year-old woman who abandoned her Jeep after hitting an illuminated police cruiser that was working a crash on the Lodge Freeway Sunday afternoon.

According to authorities, a Michigan State Police trooper was working a crash on the Lodge, near Schaefer Highway on Sunday, March 1, when their cruiser was rear-ended by a Jeep.

The cruiser’s emergency lights were active at the time.

Police said the force of the collision pushed the cruiser into the concrete wall on the right shoulder. The Jeep reportedly crossed all lanes of traffic and crashed into the center median, where the driver abandoned it and ran away on foot.

Police were able to identify the driver as a 29-year-old from Detroit.

The trooper was sent to a hospital as a precaution and has since been medically cleared.

Michigan State Police are again reminding drivers of Michigan’s Move Over Law, which took effect in 2019. It requires drivers to slow to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
