WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – The FBI is treating the attack at a West Bloomfield Township as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.”

The attack happened early Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Temple Israel, near the intersection of Walnut Lake and Drake roads. The temple has a preschool program and a large congregation, but no children or school staff were injured.
A security officer who was struck by the vehicle was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK.
The suspect died at the scene.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Jennifer Runyon said the agency is treating it as a targeted attack on the Jewish community and has taken over the investigation.
Runyon said she wouldn’t discuss details about the suspect or a possible motive because the investigation is ongoing.
A press conference with more information is expected to take place Friday morning.
What happened
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the vehicle breached the facility by driving through the doors and down a hallway. After it crashed into the building, the truck caught fire, causing smoke to billow from several locations, including the roof and doorways.
Dozens of officers have been treated for smoke inhalation.
Authorities said security personnel exchanged gunfire with the suspect after the vehicle entered the building. Police did not share details, but confirmed temple security “neutralized the threat.”

The FBI deployed crisis resources, including SWAT, negotiators, evidence response teams, bomb technicians, a WMD team, cellular analysis and victim services, drawing more than 100 agents and analysts.
