Police are asking the community to shelter in place after a truck crashed into a Jewish synagogue in West Bloomfield on Thursday afternoon, and shots were fired.
UPDATE: Sources tell Local 4 the suspect is dead.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and West Bloomfield Police Chief Dale Young gave an update after authorities were called to an “active shooting” in the early afternoon on March 12, 2026, at Temple Israel at 5725 Walnut Lake Road, in the area of Walnut Lake and Drake roads.
“At least one person came to the temple, security saw him, engaged him in gunfire,” Bouchard said.

No injuries have been confirmed at this time, except that the shooter may potentially be hurt, according to Bouchard.
The shooter is not in custody. The community is being asked to shelter in place for at least a mile.
Reunification is at the JCC, the Jewish center. Parents can go there to pick up their children.
Bouchard said the information is all still preliminary, and they will release more information as it becomes available.
Schools in the area are on lockdown. Several law enforcement agencies, including Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, the FBI and Michigan State Police have responded to the synagogue.
Temple Israel is a Jewish synagogue that has a preschool and a large congregation.
