81-year-old dies in wrong-way crash on I-696 in Farmington Hills

SUV driver escapes with minor injuries in deadly collision

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Police in Farmington Hills are investigating a deadly wrong-way crash that closed a stretch of I-696 early Friday morning.

The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. March 13 near Halsted Road. According to authorities, a white van was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-696 and crashed into a black SUV.

The driver of the van, identified as an 81-year-old man from Detroit, died from his injuries. The driver of the SUV reportedly sustained minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

The freeway opened to normal traffic just before 9 a.m.
