WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – Police have provided an update on the conditions of the officers and passengers injured in a wrong-way crash that sparked a fire in Wayne County Wednesday.

The crash happened on Ford Road at Haggerty Road, near I-275, in Canton Township on March 18, just before 1 p.m.

According to Canton Township Interim Police Chief Joseph Bialy in a media briefing on March 18, a car was speeding southbound in the northbound lanes of Haggerty Road while a semi-truck was turning at the intersection, leading to the crash.

The crash caused fuel to spill from the semi-truck, which ignited and trapped everyone in their vehicles, Bialy said.

Police officers who responded to the scene pulled the passengers out to safety, but were injured in the process.

Canton police initially said four officers and five passengers were injured.

On Thursday, March 19, police said six officers were treated and released from the hospital following the crash, along with the driver of the semi-truck. Three people who were in the SUV remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

Ford Road at Haggerty Road was closed to traffic for hours because of the fuel spill. Bialy said there is no danger to the public, and the spill was contained.

Bialy also mentioned it took crews some time to put out the flames.

“If you notice, the flames were so high that they melted the traffic control signals,” he said on Wednesday. “They fought courageously to get these flames down.”

Police said their final investigation will be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for a review of charges.
