MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 15-year-old boy has been taken into custody after reportedly stealing a car at gunpoint from a high school parking lot in Monroe County.

According to authorities, an 18-year-old Monroe High School student was in his car in the parking lot after class on Thursday, March 19, when a 15-year-old boy approached him and asked for a vape. When the victim told the boy he didn’t have a vape, the boy reportedly pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim’s vehicle.

School officials reviewed surveillance footage and identified the 15-year-old as a Monroe High School student.

The boy and the stolen car were spotted a few blocks from the school. Deputies traced the vehicle to a nearby home, where he was taken into custody.

A search of the home reportedly turned up a second stolen car and a pellet gun that authorities said matched the handgun used earlier that day.

The teen was arrested and lodged at the Monroe County Youth Center.

While authorities believe the 15-year-old acted alone, the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7530 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
