DETROIT – A man is facing first-degree murder charges in the deaths of three men who were found in the basement of a Southwest Detroit home last month, officials said.

Lance Alan Clowney, 27, of Detroit, has been charged with three counts of premeditated first-degree murder in the deaths of Mark Barnett, 65, of Detroit, Norman Hamlin, 66, also of Detroit and William Barrett, 72, of River Rouge, according to a release from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials said Barret’s wife reported him missing on Feb. 18, and the investigation led police to Hamlin’s house in the 3100 block of Edsel Street, where the three victims were found dead.

Clowney is accused of striking the three men multiple times with a hammer and knife, killing them, on Feb. 17, before leaving the scene.

He was arraigned on March 27 before Magistrate William Burton in the 36th District Court. His probable cause conference is scheduled for April 8, and his preliminary examination is scheduled for April 15 before Judge Shawn Jacque.

Clowney is also facing charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault after he allegedly hit a 69-year-old man with a hammer several times at Hamlin’s home.

This assault happened before the bodies of the three men were discovered.

Clowney’s preliminary examination on these charges has already been held, and he was bound over to a higher court where he could stand trial.
