DETROIT – Two people were shot outside a Downtown Detroit bar on Monday morning.
It happened at about 7 a.m., March 30, near Checkmate Detroit on Larned Street, between Beaubien and St Antoine.
According to authorities, a man and a woman were sitting inside a car when a third person attempted to rob them. The suspect reportedly fired multiple shots into the car, hitting both occupants.
The man and the woman are expected to survive.

Checkmate Detroit is aware of the incident reported on March 30, 2026, involving a shooting during an attempted robbery in the vicinity of our establishment on Larned Street.
We want to clearly state that this incident did not occur inside our business and is not in any way related to the operations, staff, or patrons of Checkmate Detroit. This was an isolated incident that took place outside, involving individuals not affiliated with our establishment.
Our venue was not open at the time of the incident, and no guests or employees of Checkmate Detroit were involved or harmed. While this situation is deeply concerning, we want to reassure the public that it does not reflect the environment we have worked hard to create for our guests.
The safety and well-being of our patrons, staff, and the surrounding Downtown Detroit community remain our highest priority. We have existing safety protocols in place and are continuously evaluating additional measures to ensure a secure and welcoming atmosphere for everyone who visits our establishment.
We are fully cooperating with local law enforcement and support their ongoing investigation. We also stand in support of the individuals affected and wish them a full and speedy recovery.
