Detroit officer placed on administrative duty after viral video shows repeated punching of man

Yelling between officers and family members started, and an altercation began when trying to move past

DETROIT – A Detroit police officer has been placed on “Administrative duties” after a video circulated on social media showing an officer repeatedly punching a man during an incident at a home on the city’s west side.

Police said the incident occurred on Thursday (April 2) just after midnight in the 16900 block of Wormer Street.

Officials said it started after officers stopped a young man carrying a weapon, who they say ran into a nearby home.

Police said they stopped a young man who they thought was in violation of the city’s youth curfew, then they realized he was carrying a gun.

That’s when police said he ran away from officers and ran into a nearby house.

At the start of the video above, you can see the officers trying to enter the home.

There was some yelling between officers and family members at the door, and an altercation began when officers tried to move past them.

Officers seen in the video restrained one man, and at one point, an officer is seen punching him repeatedly before other officers stop him.

Local 4 was told the man could now face charges of obstructing an officer.

Police said they also arrested the young man they initially stopped, and said he did have a handgun on him; he could also be facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon.

In a comment under this post on social media, the Detroit Police Department wrote, “We are conducting an internal investigation into the matter regarding the involved officer’s actions. Upon immediate review, we have placed one officer on administrative duties while we conduct our investigation.”

We were told that police have submitted warrant requests to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office, which will decide whether either of the men arrested will face charges.
