WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – A Michigan State Police trooper was injured after a suspected drunk driver hit her patrol car early Monday morning on I-94.

According to police, a trooper was sitting in her fully-marked patrol car with emergency lights and spot lights activated on westbound I-94 near Merriman on April 6, just after 1 a.m., when a 32-year-old driving a Lincoln lost control, crashed into the passenger side door of the patrol car, spun out and crashed into two other cars before stopping in the middle lanes of the freeway.

The trooper had to be removed from the patrol car by Romulus fire crews and was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 32-year-old driver of the Lincoln was taken to a local hospital for a blood draw and was lodged. Police said the driver showed signs of intoxication.

There were no other injuries reported, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

“We were extremely lucky that [there] were only minor injuries in this preventable crash,” said F/ Lt. Mike Shaw. “This crash serves as a reminder of two things. One, that if you see emergency vehicles on the side of the road to slow down and move over a lane. And two, there is never a reason to drive impaired. Ever.”
