Fort Gratiot man critically injured after rollover crash on I-94
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, MI – A 35-year-old Fort Gratiot man is in critical condition after authorities said the vehicle he was driving rolled over in the median of I-94, near the Michigan Welcome Center, early Thursday morning. St. Clair County Central Dispatch received reports of the single vehicle crash just after midnight Thursday, March 23. Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and found a 2009 Ford Explorer with extensive damage, according to a news release. The Fort Gratiot man, whose name has not been released, was the only occupant in the vehicle, police said. Once the vehicle struck the ground it rolled over several times.

Each kilogram can produce about 500,000 fentanyl pills, for a street value of about $1.5 million, police said. About 3 million pills with a street value of $9 million could have been made from the fentanyl, police said. This is the largest amount of fentanyl seized in a Michigan traffic stop, Michigan State Police Hometown Security Team said. He is lodged in the Van Buren County Jail.

The Osseo man was released from the hospital and lodged at the Jackson County Jail on drunken driving-related charges. Freezing rain and ice accumulation is still the main concern for Michigan’s big cities along I-94 with the Wednesday-Thursday storm. I would call this a short-lived ice storm with a significant ice accumulation lasting from late Wednesday afternoon to maybe as late as Thursday morning. The longest a thick ice accumulation should last in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Jackson and Kalamazoo is 15 hours, but could be as short as 10 hours. Through Wednesday night, the precipitation will still be freezing rain, but temperatures warming above freezing will be inching northward for the area south of I-94. Eventually by sometime Thursday morning temperatures should warm at least into the mid-30s causing the ice accumulation to melt.

VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI – A driver going too fast for the road conditions crashed on I-94 Tuesday morning. A Ford F-150 pickup and a semitrailer crashed on westbound I-94 near exit 52. The crash happened around 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 31, near the exit for Lawrence, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. The crash only caused minor injuries, Michigan State Police said, although it didn’t clarify if the crash injured the pickup driver, the semitrailer driver or both. Police searched the suspect’s vehicle and found ski masks and the cash stolen form the gas station, Radzik said. The motorist who was hit by the fleeing vehicle was also taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries deemed non-life threatening, Radzik said. After being treated for their injuries, the three suspects, 19, 21 and 23, were taken to the Washtenaw County Jail to await robbery charges, Radzik said.

At about 10:25 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, a trooper was standing near her patrol car attending to an unrelated three-car crash on eastbound I-94 near Chene Street in Hamtramck when a passing driver lost control of their vehicle, police said. The driver was traveling too fast for the icy road conditions and lost control, hitting one of the cars involved in the previous crash, pushing that car into the trooper, police said. The Michigan State Police ask all drivers to use extra caution while traveling during the holiday weekend. Several troopers suffered minor injuries and multiple patrol cars were hit during the recent blizzard.

Seven miles further east at mile marker 48 in Van Buren County, a patrol vehicle has been reportedly hit. On westbound I-94, exit 60 near Paw Paw is also closed due to a crash, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Also on westbound I-94, near mile marker 88 in Kalamazoo County, a jackknifed semi is blocking the roadway, police said. The Michigan Department of Transportation is also reporting a closure at exit 34 on eastbound I-94 near Benton Harbor.

ANN ARBOR, MI - A tractor trailer struck a vehicle operated by a top Scio Township firefighter early Thursday morning, Dec. 15 while he was directing traffic around a crash on I-94 near an Ann Arbor exit. Assistant Chief Doug Armstrong wasn’t seriously injured, according to Scio Fire Chief Andrew Houde, though the fire department SUV he was in was left badly dented, missing a side mirror and with other damage. The crash left the Scio fire vehicle out of commission, with damage to both driver’s side doors, broken wheels and ripped sheet metal. The driver of the semi was issued a citation for the incident, according to Michigan State Police officials.
