Starlight Gala brings inclusive prom experience to Oakland County

The event, open to people 18 and older, featured a catered dinner, DJ music, and a photo booth

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Oakland County Parks hosted its first Starlight Gala, a prom-style event designed for adults with developmental disabilities, bringing together participants for an evening of celebration and inclusion.

The event, open to people 18 and older, featured a catered dinner, DJ music, and a photo booth on Thursday (April 9).

Attendees arrived dressed for the occasion, filling the venue with formalwear and festive energy.

County officials said the gala is part of a broader effort to create inclusive opportunities for residents of all abilities.

“We have a wide range of people here of all different ages and we also have some group homes that come out to join us that usually live in that group home setting that this is a big field trip for them for the night as well as we have some individuals who might have just gotten out of high school or who are still in high school.

said Ana Forshey, Recreation Program Coordinator for Adaptive and Wellness Programs at Oakland County Parks

Oakland County Parks offers a range of adaptive programs, including fishing, archery, and cycling, to make outdoor recreation more accessible to a wider range of people.

Officials said events like the Starlight Gala help foster connection and community while highlighting the county’s commitment to inclusion.
