SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A man is in custody after he attacked his father and barricaded himself in a Southfield basement, police said.

Officers were called around 12:45 p.m. Friday to a domestic dispute in the area of Ariel and Pennsylvania streets in Southfield.

The dispute involved a 41-year-old son attacking his 60-year-old father, according to Southfield police Chief Elvin Barren.

Police said the man was armed with a knife. Barren said the man also had access to a shotgun inside the home.

Dozens of authorities -- police officers and a SWAT team -- went to the scene during the standoff. Barren said he believed the man was in the basement of the home.

Everyone else was able to get out of the home safely, Barren said.

The 41-year-old man was taken into custody around 4:15 p.m. Friday.

Family members said they had concerns about the man’s mental state due to narcotics and alcohol, according to the chief.

“Oftentimes, families do have conflicts,” Barren said. “We’re just hopeful that, with our negotiators, that he will come out peacefully.”

Local 4 first learned about the standoff from a Help Desk tip about a heavy police presence on Fairfax Street in Southfield.

We arrived to find several heavily armed officers in the area, as well as an armored vehicle and SWAT team.
