National Volunteer Week: The value of giving your time in Michigan

55% of Americans volunteer for non-religious organizations

This week is National Volunteer Week -- a time to celebrate the people who show up for their communities and encourage more to join them.

And the numbers show people are answering the call. According to a Gallup poll, 63% of Americans volunteered their time to a charitable organization in the past year, and 76% gave money to a cause.

There is a shift happening, too.

Volunteering for non-religious organizations hit a majority for the first time ever, at 55%, as more Americans devote time and money to causes they care about.

In Michigan, that time has real value.

According to Independent Sector, a volunteer hour in Michigan in 2024 was worth $32.87 -- up 4% from the year before.

One Metro Detroit nonprofit helping people find the right place to give their time is Share Detroit, and their executive director, Karly Moore, joined Local 4 Live Tuesday morning.
