E-bike explosion kills 1 in Upper Peninsula

Police say the electric bicycle was stored inside the Kingsford home when it exploded

KINGSFORD, Mich. – An Upper Peninsula resident died after an electronic bicycle reportedly exploded and lit a house on fire.

It happened Tuesday, April 21, in Kingsford, roughly 50 miles west of Escanaba.

Police said the e-bike was inside the home when it exploded. First responders arrived just before 11:30 p.m. to find the home actively engulfed in flames.

One person died after becoming trapped inside. Two others were able to escape. Several pets were also killed in the fire. Police have not released further details.

The Michigan State Police Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation.
