1 in 4 are estranged from a family member, study suggests

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and for a lot of people, it’s a beautiful day of brunch, flowers, and quality time with the moms and mother figures in our lives -- a day to celebrate the women who raised us.

But for some people, this weekend is a bit complicated. Grief, loss, estrangement, infertility, strained relationships—for millions of people, Mother’s Day can bring up emotions that are anything but easy.

Studies suggest that about one in four people are estranged from a family member, and social media—with all its picture-perfect posts—can make that feel even harder.

Dr. Jameel Smith, a psychologist with Henry Ford Health, joined Local 4 Live to talk about how to navigate the holiday when your feelings are more complicated than a Hallmark card.
