Detroit man accused of killing 2 in drunk driving crash

DETROIT – A man is facing multiple charges for allegedly driving drunk and striking two people with his car in Detroit, killing them.

Nicholas Alexander Lee-Nathan, 29, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death and two counts of reckless driving causing death.

At around 2 a.m. on June 28, police responded to the area of W McNichols and Ardmore Street for a report of a car crash involving pedestrians.

When officers arrived, they found two people, Dawad Helton, 51, and Erica Smith, 43, lying on the roadway. They were taken to a local hospital, where they died from their injuries.

Lee-Nathan is accused of driving westbound on W McNichols at a high rate of speed when he struck Helton and Smith while they were crossing the street. He was also taken to a local hospital for treatment.

On July 1, he was arraigned in court and was remanded without bond.

Lee-Nathan is expected to return to court on July 9 for a probable cause conference.
