DETROIT – The man accused of killing a 40-year-old Sterling Heights woman in a fatal hit-and-run while driving drunk in Detroit last fall was sentenced on Tuesday to 6-15 years in prison.
Cameron Lee Sims, 24, of Farmington Hills, faced five charges in connection to the Sept. 5 collision, including operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, leaving the scene of an accident when at fault causing death, carrying a concealed weapon, and using a vehicle in commission of a felony.
He pleaded no contest to all five charges in May, and was sentenced at the 3rd Circuit Court before Judge Anne Marie McCarthy. He received a 12-day credit for time already served.
Police say Sims was driving under the influence of alcohol at a high rate of speed when he crashed into the victim Sandi Odisho’s vehicle near the intersection of Eight Mile Road and Schoenherr Street on Detroit’s east side.
“An innocent woman is dead because this person was allegedly intoxicated and failed to follow the rules of the road. He then compounded that by allegedly leaving the scene of a criminal crash where he was at fault,” said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy after Sims’ arraignment last year. “I have said this over and over again — the rules of the road are not voluntary — they are mandatory.”
A second suspect who was reportedly in Sims’ vehicle was arrested, however it’s unclear whether they faced any charges.
