1 dead, 2 injured after vehicle struck by gunfire on I-96

The eastbound I-96 local lanes near Bentler remain closed while troopers investigate the scene.

DETROIT – One person has died and two others were injured early Wednesday morning after police say a suspect fired shots into their vehicle on eastbound I-96 in Detroit.

According to Michigan State Police, the incident occurred around 12:51 a.m. near Bentler Street, just east of Outer Drive. Police say the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no known threat to the public. The two injured individuals have been transported to a local hospital.

The eastbound I-96 local lanes near Bentler remain closed while troopers investigate the scene. The express lanes remain open. Police ask that drivers avoid the area and use an alternate route.

Investigation outside Detroit’s 6th Precinct

Meanwhile, an investigation is also underway outside Detroit Police Department’s 6th Precinct, where an SUV filled with bullet holes appears to have been abandoned early Wednesday morning.

Local 4 received reports about the abandoned vehicle around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning. Several Detroit police, ATF officers and Michigan State Police troopers were on-site.

Police have not confirmed whether the two scenes are connected. The investigation is ongoing.
