Dangerous heat and wildfire smoke impacting Metro Detroit Wednesday

A Heat Advisory is in effect for all of Southeast Michigan until 8 p.m. along with an Air Quality Alert.

Metro Detroit is facing a dangerous combination of extreme heat and poor air quality today as both a Heat Advisory and Air Quality Alert remain in effect across Southeast Michigan.

Afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, and when combined with the high humidity, heat index values will soar well into the triple digits. These conditions can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors. Make sure to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

Adding to the weather concerns is widespread Canadian wildfire smoke, which has settled near the surface and is creating unhealthy air quality across the region. Sensitive groups—including children, older adults, and those with asthma or other respiratory conditions—should limit time outdoors. Even healthy individuals may notice irritation or breathing discomfort during periods of heavier smoke.

A few isolated thunderstorms may develop this evening, but many communities will remain dry. Better opportunities for more widespread showers and thunderstorms arrive Friday and continue into Saturday.

Wildfire smoke is expected to remain widespread across Southeast Michigan tonight and into Thursday morning, which could lead to additional air quality concerns through the end of the week if concentrations remain elevated.

Relief from the extreme heat is finally in sight. Temperatures will return to more typical late-summer levels this weekend, with highs settling back into the 80s while occasional showers and thunderstorms remain possible.
