DETROIT – The Detroit Jazz Festival will return to downtown Detroit over Labor Day weekend with a lineup featuring some of the biggest names in jazz, along with changes designed to improve the festival experience for attendees.
The festival, now in its 47th year, announced its full 2026 lineup in July.

The free event will take place Sept. 4-7, 2026, with performances centered at Hart Plaza and additional programming at the Detroit Jazz Hall inside the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University.
This year’s lineup includes jazz legends and contemporary artists such as Ron Carter, Bob James, Ravi Coltrane, Kurt Elling, Artemis and 2026 Artist-in-Residence Joe Lovano.
Festival officials said the 2026 event will consolidate its three main stages at Hart Plaza to create a more connected layout and make it easier for visitors to move between performances.
The festival will feature four stages:
- Carhartt Amphitheater Stage at Hart Plaza
- Pyramid Stage at Hart Plaza
- Absopure Waterfront Stage at Hart Plaza
- Detroit Jazz Hall inside the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University
Organizers said the changes will not affect the festival’s free admission, number of stages or overall number of performances.
2026 Detroit Jazz Festival changes
The festival will introduce several updates for attendees, including a fully consolidated Hart Plaza footprint, updated stage layouts and improved navigation throughout the event.
Hart Plaza hours will be:
- Friday, Sept. 4: 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Saturday, Sept. 5: 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Sunday, Sept. 6: 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
- Monday, Sept. 7: 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A new policy will prohibit coolers inside Hart Plaza, with organizers saying the change is intended to improve safety, crowd flow and the overall experience.
Star-studded lineup
The festival opens Friday night with performances including Dr. Valade’s Brass Band featuring Shannon Powell, Miles Electric Band and Joe Lovano’s Paramount Quartet featuring Julian Lage, Asante Sante Debriano and Will Calhoun.
Saturday’s lineup includes Ravi Coltrane Quartet’s Centennial Celebration, Kurt Elling & Yellowjackets celebrating Weather Report, Bob James, Cyrille Aimée Quartet and Artemis.
Sunday performances include Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet: Sound Prints, Take 6, Catherine Russell, Dee Dee Bridgewater & Bill Charlap and Vijay Iyer Trio with special guest Adam O’Farrill.
Monday’s closing lineup features Cindy Blackman Santana, Joey Alexander Trio, The Django Festival Allstars with special guest Grace Kelly and Ron Carter & Foursight.
The Detroit Jazz Hall will also host performances throughout the weekend, including student jazz ensembles and late-night “Midtown After Hours” performances.
All festival performances will also be streamed for free online through the Detroit Jazz Festival’s website, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation said the event remains one of Detroit’s largest cultural attractions, drawing visitors from around the world. According to organizers, 26% of festival attendees come from outside Michigan.
