ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – A 12-year-old from Rochester Hills was seriously injured after crashing an electric motorcycle into a parked pickup truck.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 8:24 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 6) to the area of Dorfield Drive and Briston Drive after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a crash involving an electric motorcycle and a parked vehicle.
Callers reported the child was unconscious following the collision.
The preliminary investigation found that the child was operating an electric motorcycle when it struck a legally parked 2010 Ram 1500, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Rochester Hills firefighters transported the child to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, where the child was admitted in serious but stable condition.
Officials said the electric motorcycle was advertised as capable of speeds exceeding 45 mph.
The vehicle was not registered or insured, authorities said.
The child was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but police determined it was designed for bicycle use and was not rated for motorcycle use.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office reminded parents and riders that electric motorcycles can differ significantly from electric bicycles.
Depending on their design, power and maximum speed, some electric vehicles may be classified as motorcycles or other motor vehicles under Michigan law and may be subject to licensing, registration, insurance and equipment requirements.
The Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.
