LIVONIA, Mich. – One of the two men charged in connection with the deadly stabbing of a Detroit man in Livonia over a stolen backpack has pleaded guilty.
Scott Andrew Harrington, 26, of Taylor, was charged with larceny from a building and receiving and concealing stolen property worth between $200 and $1,000. Spencer Jude Krusell, 30, of Highland Park, was charged with second-degree murder as a habitual offender - fourth offense.
The stabbing happened on May 29 in the area of Middlebelt Road and Orangelawn Street at around 4:30 p.m. Nicholos Hatcher, a 34-year-old from Detroit, was found lying on the side of the road with a single stab wound to the upper chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, Hatcher, Krusell and Harrington were seen at a BioLife Plasma Services center on Plymouth Road in Livonia prior to the stabbing, where police said one of the suspects stole Hatcher’s backpack.
Hatcher later followed the suspects to a nearby area, where investigators said he confronted them, which escalated into a fight. This resulted in Hatcher being stabbed.
Police found Harrington and Krusell in a neighboring city the night of the stabbing, where they were both arrested and later charged.
On Sept. 14, Harrington pleaded guilty to larceny in a building. The charge of receiving and concealing stolen property was dismissed as part of a plea deal.
Harrington is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 26, the same day Krusell is scheduled to go on trial.
