1 hospitalized after reported explosion at building on Detroit’s west side

DETROIT – Firefighters responded to a reported explosion at a building on Detroit’s west side on Monday.

Crews were seen at a commercial building on Northlawn Street, just south of Plymouth Road, at around 11 a.m. on Sept. 21.

According to the Detroit Fire Department, a 79-year-old man was found outside the building suffering from severe burns. The man reported that he was working with chemicals at the time.

Firefighters saw a small fire just inside the building’s door. The fire was put out quickly, and the man was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital in critical condition.

There were two other employees inside the business at the time, but neither was hurt.

The investigation is ongoing.
