Police investigating shooting outside Martin Luther King High School

DETROIT – A shooting just steps away from a Detroit high school Friday night has left one teen dead and another injured.

Sources say the teens were trying to rob the basketball coach at Martin Luther King High School. The coach is also a Detroit Police Department reserve officer who was carrying a weapon.

At about 7:30 p.m. the coach exited the school with two girls with him when the two teens walked up and tried to rob him. The coach pulled out his gun and shot both teens.

The teen who was killed was a former student at the high school. He was recently expelled from the school. The other teen, a 16-year-old, was shot in the stomach. He is at Detroit Receiving Hospital in serious condition.

The deceased teen's body was found by police on the median on Larned Street.
