CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Students at Macomb Community College rushed to their vehicles Tuesday night after a lockdown at center campus was lifted.
For nearly three hours students stayed in classrooms at the Clinton Township campus. They turned off the lights and locked the doors as police searched for a gunman.
It was about 6 p.m. when a Henry Ford Hospital doctor told police he saw a man with an assault rifle walking near the wooded area on the southwest corner of campus. As word trickled out to students and faculty, concerned parents waited for their children in the parking lot. The college sent this text alert about 6:30 p.m.:
"Reporting a man carrying an automatic weapon near the wooded area at Center Campus. Center Campus is on lockdown until further notice. Do not fo to this campus."
Police never found the reported gunman. They called off the search about 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Clinton Township police, Shelby Township police, Sterling Heights police, the U.S. Coast Guard and campus police all were involved in the search.
Classes will resume as scheduled on Wednesday.
