Man in critical condition after shooting outside Arab-American market in Detroit

DETROIT – A man is in critical condition after a shooting outside a popular Arab-American market on the west side Sunday evening.

The man was reportedly shot twice in the chest while sitting in his car in the parking lot on Michigan Avenue near Lonyo Street.

"We seen [sic] him," a witness said. "He’s from the neighborhood. He grew up on south end of Dearborn."

Detroit police surrounded the small market after the 34-year-old man was shot in the parking lot.

"When I️ walked out (of) the store, we saw a kid collapsed on the outside of his car, going in and out of consciousness," the witness said.

Other witnesses who saw what happened said they saw somebody running from the victim's vehicle.

People who live in the area described it is a tight-knit Yemini-American neighborhood.

"You might have noticed a mosque right there," another witness said. "Kids are always walking out (of) the mosque and go to the store to buy food -- young kids, older kids, it’s a busy intersection."

The Arab-American victim was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

"It’s very sad to see, especially for our small Yemini-American community in Detroit," a resident said. "It’s not something we see every day."

Detroit police are reviewing surveillance cameras at a number of nearby businesses to see if the shooting was captured on camera.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit police.
