AUBURN HILLS – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office has arrested one suspect in connection with a shooting at Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills that left one man dead and a woman injured on Saturday.

Police say they received reports of gunfire in the food court around 5:20 p.m. When they arrived, they found a 20-year-old Pontiac man who had died after getting shot inside a clothing store near the Rainforest Cafe, and a 19-year-old with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

The alleged shooter, identified as a 22-year-old man from Detroit, remained on scene and is cooperating with officers. The sheriff’s office said preliminary investigation show the two men involved had gotten into an altercation at the mall earlier in the day, and when they crossed paths again a fight broke out. Police say the alleged shooter reported he was jumped by the victim who died and another unknown man before the shots were fired.

The mall is expected to remain closed for the rest of the evening while the investigation is underway. Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the incident reach out to the Auburn Hills Police Department at 248-370-9444.

The fatal shooting is the second to occur inside a Metro Detroit mall in just over a week. Two people were killed and another injured in a shooting at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn July 3 that reportedly also stemmed from an altercation between two parties.

Two 19-year-old suspects were charged with carrying a concealed weapon in connection with that shooting, however neither were charged with murder as prosecutors determined the shooting to be in self defense.
