Police: Stepson produced handgun, fatally shot stepfather

DETROIT – A man was shot and killed by his teenage stepson Saturday on Detroit's west side, Detroit police said.

Update: Teen who shot, killed stepfather in Detroit arrested

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. in the 16800 block of Ward Avenue, near McNichols Road and the Lodge Freeway.

Police said the 46-year-old stepfather and 17-year-old stepson were arguing over money when the stepson produced a handgun and fatally shot his stepfather multiple times.

Detroit police spent hours looking for evidence on the front lawn, where the man's body was found.

"The stepson fled. We are actively looking for him," Capt. Constance Slappey said. "There's more than one way to resolve a conflict, and guns and weapons is not the answer. That's why we have our voices and we need to use them."

The 46-year-old man was fatally shot outside his cousin's home, where family had gathered to start the holiday weekend.

"Our hearts are heavy for them. Being the Detroit Police Department, we never want anyone in this city to lose their life in any type of way," Slappey said.

The teen fled in a black 2007 or 2008 Dodge Charger, police said.

Family members wept as the victim's body was taken from the home.

"Our hearts and prayers definitely go out to this family," Slappey said. "Again, young man, you know who you are. Please turn yourself in to the nearest Detroit police precinct."
