Man suspected of fatally stabbing his mother arrested after altercation with officer in Westland

22-year-old man taken into custody after shots fired by Livonia officer

WESTLAND, Mich. – A 22-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after an altercation with a Westland police officer.

Police said a 50-year-old woman was stabbed to death around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 6100 block of Walton Street. Investigators named her 22-year-old son as the suspect in her slaying.

Westland police alerted surrounding communities about the man, and a Livonia police officer found him near Joy Road and Donna Street in Westland. When the officer approached the man, a struggle ensued, and shots were fired, police said.

The man was taken into custody in the 8700 block of Randy Drive after a short foot chase. He had a minor injury from a gunshot, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital.

Police are keeping the man in custody as the investigation continues.

Multiple schools impacted

Multiple schools were under a shelter-in-place protocol as police investigated the homicide.

Joy Road was closed in both directions between Danzig and Hillcrest streets.

The schools affected were Franklin High, Hayes Elementary, Cooper Upper Elementary, Grant Elementary and Western Wayne Skill Center.
