Michigan 7th grader who died after track meet had congenital heart defect

District-wide crisis response team activated for teachers, students

IDA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 7th grade student at Ida Middle School died Tuesday morning after running a 400-meter dash at a track meet.

Jasmin Torres, 13, died after participating in a track meet at Hudson Middle School.

According to the superintendent, the student wasn’t feeling well after running and was taken to see the school's doctor and athletic trainer.

EMS was called and the girl was taken to a hospital in Adrian where she died.

UPDATE: Jasmin had congenital heart defect. The heart ailment is a defect or abnormality, not a disease. A defect results when the heart or blood vessels near the heart don't develop normally before birth. The student has been with the Ida School District since kindergarten and has a sisters in high school and elementary school.

"Jasmin was always smiling, always happy. As a result, she has a large friendship group and certainly has a lot of support within the Ida community," said Richard Carsten, Ida Public Schools superintendent. 

The majority of students were informed about the student’s death and a district-wide crisis response team was activated for teachers and students. Counselors were available for students Wednesday morning, and will continue to provide support.
