Michigan corrections officer charged with homicide for 2015 inmate suicide

A state corrections officer was charged Wednesday with homicide for the 2015 suicide death of an inmate at Huron Valley Correctional Facility. 

The Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney's office charged Dianna Lynn Callahan, 47, of Flint, with homicide -- involuntary manslaughter, and willful neglect of duty by a public official. Callahan was arraigned on Wednesday.

Janika Nicole Edmond, an inmate at the Michigan Department of Corrections Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Pittsfield Township, committed suicide in November 2015. 

The prosecutor's complaint alleges Callahan "was grossly negligent in failing, in violation of MDOC policy, to perform a legal duty to timely and properly respond to a threat of suicide" made by Edmond.

Michigan State Police investigated the case. 

"Homicide—Involuntary Manslaughter" is a felony carrying a possible maximum penalty of imprisonment for 15 years and/or a $ 7,500 fine. "Public Official—Willful Neglect of Duty" is a misdemeanor carrying a possible maximum penalty of incarceration for 1 year and/or a $1,000 fine. 

Pontiac attorney William Hatchett represented Callahan. 

A probable cause hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 26, 2017 and a preliminary examination has been set for 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 2, 2017. Both will be held at the 14A-1 District Court Building, 4133 Washtenaw Avenue in Pittsfield Township.
